Protecting my data:

#0: Before First thing

Stop ads

whether it is Google or Facebook, their only business is to serve you ads, collecting data about too but we will come another time. So lets stop them serving yor ads.

Personal Computers

The first step to protect your data is to check the tracking activity by browsers. So lets start with blocking ads on browser first.

Google Chrome

It is Google's den to read most of your browsing data. Using this app, Google is reading all your browsing history on its websites with almost all the websites your are visiting through this browser. We will talk about it later but disable the ads first.

Following are the extensions which you can install in Google chrome to disable the ads.

Extension Name What it does?
Adblock Plus

It disables all the ads served on the webpages your visit. You can enable as well as disable for web pages/ web sites or for websites whenever you want.

uBlock origin

Websites track everything you do and advertise to you all the time. uBlock Origin is a free and open source browser extension (all major browsers) that blocks all that stuff. Because it blocks ads from loading, you use less data (pay less for it too, perhaps) and the internet becomes faster. Developed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, who fight for your online privacy rights, amongst other things.

Decentraleyes

Protects you against tracking through "free", centralized, content delivery. It prevents a lot of requests from reaching networks like Google Hosted Libraries, and serves local files to keep sites from breaking. Complements regular content blockers.

HTTPS everywhere

If you connect to a website via http only, the traffic between your computer and that website is visible to others. If you connect via https, it travels encrypted and is very difficult for outside people to spy on. Many websites have both options. This browser add-on ensures https is used wherever it's available. (Hint: https connections usually give rise to a little green padlock symbol to the left of the website address in your browser.)

Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox is said to be a user friendly browser with user privacy in mind. But it does not and should not sniff all your webpages. So in firefox too, you need to install the add-ons to protect you from all the trackers present on the web.

Adaway

Yes

An ad blocker that uses the hosts file. The hosts file contains a list of mappings between hostnames and IP addresses. When an app requests an ad, that request is directed to 127.0.0.1 which does nothing. There are options to run a web server to respond to blocked hostnames and to direct requests to the IP address of your choosing. You can download hosts files from the app but it is possible to use your own and to add certain sites to the white- and black-lists.
